# Automatic DNS setup

> Configure a domain through your DNS provider.

> Draft for adaptation. Confirm MailTeam’s supported providers, credential handling, and DNS behavior before publishing.

## Prepare your domain

Automatic setup uses your DNS provider’s API to install mail records: MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, transport-security records, and client-discovery records. Review existing records before changing mail routing.

## Provider credentials

| Provider | Open your provider’s page | Credential format |
| - | - | - |
| Cloudflare | [API tokens](https://dash.cloudflare.com/profile/api-tokens) | Zone-scoped DNS-edit token |
| GoDaddy | [Developer keys](https://developer.godaddy.com/keys) | `key:secret` |
| Namecheap | [API access](https://ap.www.namecheap.com/settings/tools/apiaccess) | `apiKey:username` |
| AWS Route 53 | [IAM console](https://console.aws.amazon.com/iam/home) | `accessKeyId:secretAccessKey` |
| Hostinger | [hPanel API](https://hpanel.hostinger.com/api) | API token |
| DreamHost | [API settings](https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=home.api) | DNS-management API key |

Keep Cloudflare mail records unproxied and resolve any Email Routing conflict. For Route 53, the credentials must cover the account containing the domain’s hosted zone.

DreamHost needs permissions to list, add, and remove DNS records. Its API cannot install MX records; add the supplied MX entry through the control panel.

## Not hosted with one of these providers?

You can use Cloudflare’s free DNS service while keeping your domain registered with your current provider.

### How to point your domain at Cloudflare for free

1. [Add your domain to Cloudflare](https://dash.cloudflare.com/) and select the Free plan.
2. Review the imported DNS records and add any missing website or email records before switching.
3. At your domain registrar, replace the existing nameservers with the nameservers Cloudflare assigns. Follow [Cloudflare’s nameserver setup guide](https://developers.cloudflare.com/dns/zone-setups/full-setup/setup/), including its DNSSEC instructions.
4. Once Cloudflare confirms the domain is active, follow the Cloudflare credential steps in the [provider table](#provider-credentials), then verify your domain in MailTeam.

Changing nameservers moves DNS management to Cloudflare; it does not transfer your domain registration or move your website hosting.

## Finish setup

Inspect the generated records, then check domain verification. DNS updates can take time to become visible.

Prefer manual configuration? Enter the required records directly at your provider instead of supplying API credentials.
